According to the Agni Yoga Teachings, crime is a “disease” and criminality is to be understood as the “most terrible infection” which not only ruins the body, but also the soul.
When we are indifferent to crimes that violate or debase human dignity, we may choose to stand back. We may choose to stand by. In doing so, we become accomplices of the crimes.
We are told that we can evaluate the level of consciousness of an entire nation by its judges and, where they allow themselves to be bribed and constrict their thought, the soul of the nation is for sale.
So what is the karma associated with this insidious infection of crime?
“Urusvati knows about the action of the Law of Karma. One can observe that karma overtakes not only the one who commits a crime, but also those who participate in it indirectly. There is truth in the saying that for one person’s crime a whole nation suffers. It is not only the motive that unites participants in crime, but aspects of their nature also bring them together. Who can tell the degree of affinity of blood relationships, or judge the degree of participation? Some may have encouraged the criminal verbally, others mentally. Who can define this, or determine the main cause?” (Supermundane, 229)
We can choose not to commit crimes – Directly. Relatively easy for many! But, indirectly…?
Any loosening of our trust in the infallibility of Cosmic Right takes us to a dangerous place of by-stander behaviour which we know as complicity in the crimes. Not idly standing back. Not neutral standing by. Actual complicity. Criminality is an infection. The contagion spreads in body and soul.
Instead of standing back or standing by, the Agni Yoga Teachings urge us to stand within the Heart. The Heart – the great unifier of all worlds. When we stand within the Heart we stand within that ethical compass of our greater identity as a citizen within the Cosmos, joyfully subject to Cosmic Right and Cosmic Justice on Earth.
And here in the Heart, there is labour. The labour of thought. Thought is identical to action.
The Teachings urge us to inquire into ourselves for any residual resonant roots of the illness of crime:
“Few care to think about how broadly karma moves, or to search within their own Chalice of Accumulations to discover how and when they have participated in crime. We can only remind you about the law, but free will must choose its way.” (Supermundane, 229)
It is within the discovery from inquiry that we expose these roots to the light and thus purify ourselves, our environment, nation, the planet and, ultimately, space.
The great Law of Karma thus acts in the name of the restoration of equilibrium.
The process is intrinsic to the Teaching of the Heart. The Hierarchy, the planetary Heart centre, is known as the Teaching of the Heart:
“Hierarchy is cooperation. But with cooperation, the intensification of energies results in a continuous circuit of sparks, from above downward and from below upward. The dynamo producing this flaming torrent is the heart. It means that above all else, Hierarchy is the Teaching of the Heart. One should be accustomed to understanding the heart as the central motive power. One cannot understand the flame without understanding the significance of the heart. I spoke to you of many centres, but just now I especially stress the Chalice and the heart.” (Hierarchy, 448).
No other centre can replace the essence of the heart.
The heart has at its disposal the accumulations of the ages stored in the Chalice.
It is said that the salvation of humanity lies in this central motive force.
In the face of any epidemic of crime, let us not stand by as its accomplices, but rather stand

and presence the artistry of Their Thought—our thought as action— so we build immunity and restore the equilibrium of Cosmic Right.
It is time for humanity to accept our relationship with Cosmic Right. Master Morya says:
“Many legal statutes have been invented by humanity, but the most immutable has not been pronounced—that of cosmic right. It is easily seen how often this law is applied and how it guides life. One may often observe how something impossible according to human laws is nevertheless accomplished… One cannot but feel that something over and above earthly reasonings guides circumstances; in this something are the will, cosmic chemism, and the most immutable magnet. Cosmic law brings destined people close to world problems. Sometimes they cannot explain how unexpected details are put together. But they realize that their heart is aflame. Thus it is, as it were, joined to something unalterable. In conformity with this immutable law it is possible to pass over the most dangerous abyss. Such full authority may be called Hierarchic, but when we add to this the chemism of the luminaries and the delineations of the far-off Worlds, it is then possible to define such a right as cosmic.” (Fiery World II, 454)
And further:
“Cosmic Right reveals to the planet the unity of Principles which guides the entire Universe.” (Fiery World III, 194)
