Silent Friend

A 180 year old gingko tree stands at its heart of the film in a German university town where it bears silent witness to the lives of three characters over more than a century: a botanist forging a challenging path as the first female student accepted by the male-dominated institution (1908); two classmates who bond over a geranium (1972); and a lonely visiting neuroscientist in search of meaning from the tree’s electromagnetic signals under the guidance of a French biologist (2020).

The film beautifully explores humanity’s deep routed connection with nature.  It invites us to deeply immerse ourselves in – and identify with – the life of nature posing the question: What if they observe us in the way we observe them?

The film recently screened at the Sydney Film Festival is recommended.
