In 2025, we held a meditative focus on 15 April to commemorate the 90th Anniversary of the signing of the Roerich Peace Pact which brought its accompanying symbol, the Banner of Peace, into greater prominence.
As a result of this focus, we became profoundly aware of the significance of the Banner of Peace as a universal symbol in this moment in Humanity’s evolutionary journey.

This article speaks to the role of the Banner of Peace in saving the world. Acknowledging that any symbol in the Manifest World has the capacity to act as a portal through to the reality of the underlying energies sub-standing it.
The Banner of Peace introduced as a flag to be flown over Humanity’s achievements in the arts, sciences and religion in times of war and peace, was to act as a Red Cross for the preservation of World Culture. The purpose behind the Banner of Peace was for it to be a protector of the spiritual health of Humanity.
Nicholas Roerich said that the Banner of Peace would, always and everywhere, be a call to the heart of Humanity. He acknowledged that the same essence or creative power resides in the holistic heart of each and every human being. The holistic heart is the heart that recognises our true identity as human beings living simultaneously within the three worlds:

- The Subtle World or World of the Soul
- The Manifest World of World of the Personality.

The heart is the place – or inner space – in which these worlds are unified. We could thus call the Banner of Peace the Banner of the Heart in which we establish necessary harmonious equilibrium between the worlds.
As a key symbol of the Yoga of Synthesis, the Banner of Peace has a number of aliases:
The Banner of the Heart
The Banner of Culture
The Banner of Light
The Banner of Synthesis
The Banner of Eternity
Less well-known perhaps is its alias as the Banner of Beauty.
Nicholas Roerich said:
If in our hearts we call the Banner of Peace
the Banner of Beauty
this short name
will of course resound in the heart…
May our Banner be that sacred symbol of Peace,
which by its presence will remind humanity
of its evolutionary destiny!

So how might the Banner of Peace as the Banner of Beauty play a role in saving the world?
Master Morya, in New Era Community, sloka 27, says:
It is not quite right to say beauty will save the world. It is more accurate to say that the realization of beauty will save the world.
As we consciously work with the Banner of Peace as the Banner of Beauty we realise that it can touch, transmit and radiate its underlying energy of Beauty. Master Morya says that:
When I speak about beauty, I have in mind first of all beauty of thought.
We recognise and realise that we can serve to save the world through the beauty of our thinking. Further, He urges us for the sake of the Cosmos, to think beautifully. To do that, we are encouraged to become artists of thought. This is not beyond us. This is not for the few. It is for all of us. It is our human destiny. Yet the Banner of Peace must be adopted in spirit, that is, within the all-embracing fullness of our identity where we truly participate in the art of thinking. Thinking in the Heart. Thinking that awakens, draws forth and distils our knowing from all three worlds – the Fiery, the Subtle, in addition to the Manifest World.

Imagine the opportunity offered to Humanity – the 8.3 billion of us dotted around the globe – as artists of life creating Beauty moment to moment through the artistry of our thought.
Master Morya says:
A wondrous truth is in beauty.
Cosmos affirms evolution by this formula.
Cosmos directs the world to the mastery of beauty. Infinity I, 178.

In summary, working with the Banner of Peace as the Banner of Beauty we have the opportunity to save the world moment by moment through the artistry of our thinking knowing that thought and action are identical. We save the world through thinking beautifully.
