Our dream experiences can often be coloured by what we last read or watched before sleeping. It seems that the subtle impulses reaching us in sleep are presented in terms of the symbols that hover in consciousness from our experience of the outer world. It is as though whatever we focus upon colours or tints the field of our awareness like a dye dropped into water that spreads until it eventually dissolves. And as we peer through that colouring, it acts as a veil over the light of a greater reality impressing upon us. St Paul wrote of the clarity of this inner light:
For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. 1 Corinthians 13:12
We might wonder what would shine through into the world if we could focus more on the glorious light behind the veils we have created
The outer world is a world of forms and symbols which can either reflect the inner reality or mask it. The stronger the inner light the more clearly it shines through, and transforms, eventually rendering the outer symbolic forms translucent. The Tibetan Master wrote:
Remember that when we talk and think in symbols, we are placing something between ourselves and reality—something protective, interpretive and significant, but something nevertheless veiling and hiding. After the fifth initiation all veils are rent and naught stands between the initiate and Essential Being.” The Rays and the Initiations, page 178
The paths of light and dark are becoming clearer as we pay attention.
In this special season of the year, our attention is redirected to the inner light as we celebrate the birth of One Who brought a whole new dispensation to humankind – that of Love in all its forms of expression. Such was the impact of His presence in the world that it is still reverberating over two thousand years later and is still being understood. He came to embody the true Light of the world and to remind us of the light within us through His living demonstration, showing the way we may each reflect light and love into the world.
We are more powerful than we may yet realise. Imagine how our world could be if we all focussed our attention on what is good, true and beautiful through our every thought, feeling and action.
At the heart of everything there is a finer more beautiful light which is the essence we share.
Broadly has spread the praise of daring. The least of the disciples have turned to the path of searching and have approached Us, asking that We judge their striving. Each brought his dreams: ‘I will destroy all earthly temples, because Truth needs no walls. I will water all deserts. I will open all prisons. I will demolish all swords. I will blaze all trails. I will wipe away all tears. I will travel through all lands. I will inscribe the book of humanity.’
But the least one of them turned to the shining stars and said, ‘Hail to you, brothers!’ And in this salutation of daring his ego vanished.
Let the path of the Universe be acknowledged in this daring greeting!” Agni Yoga, sloca 12
…the light of the cosmos is intimately within us, in our essential being
We are told in the Bible that Christ will come in the air, and that He will bring the ‘healing of the nations’ in His wings…[and] When the Avatar has made His appearance, then will the
‘Sons of men who are now the Sons of God withdraw Their faces from the shining light and radiate that light upon the sons of men who know not yet they are the Sons of God. Then shall the Coming One appear, His footsteps hastened through the valley of the shadow by the One of awful power Who stands upon the mountain top, breathing out love eternal, light supernal and peaceful silent Will.
‘Then will the sons of men respond. Then will a newer light shine forth into the dismal weary vale of earth. Then will new life course through the veins of men, and then will their vision compass all the ways of what may be.
‘So peace will come again on earth, but a peace unlike aught known before. Then will the will-to-good flower forth as understanding, and understanding blossom as goodwill in men.” The Rays and the Initiations, page 94-5
This is the promise held sacred in the hearts of all attentive to the Light within. May it come to fruition through us – each and every one.
